12, 2011 SABIC Innovative Plastics is again demonstrating its industry leadership here at Brasilplast 2011 where the company is highlighting in booth E50/F51 two cutting-edge materials technologies for sports stadium construction. These include flame-retardant, ultraviolet (UV)-stabilized Valox* resin for stadium seating, which meets stringent new requirements of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT) for open and closed stadiums, and new Ultra-Stiff Lexan* Thermoclear* sheet for roofing and glazing. These products significantly enhance attendee safety and comfort; provide greater design freedom; and comply with tightening environmental regulations vs. traditional materials. They are the latest additions to SABIC Innovative Plastics’ broad and growing portfolio of building and construction products, including Lexan Thermoclick* and monolithic sheet. Building on three decades of proven performance, Lexan sheet is the material of choice of architects and designers for roofing, walls, stairway enclosures and many more applications in well-known arenas and stadiums around the world. “The upcoming World Cup and Olympic events will focus the world on Brazil’s stadiums and arenas,” said Ricardo Knecht, general manager, SABIC Innovative Plastics, Brazil. “Against this backdrop, SABIC Innovative Plastics’ distinctive products will highlight the exceptional design, performance and environmental responsibility they contribute to the sport-loving legacy of the nation. Lightweight and versatile Valox resin for example, allows us to be one of the few suppliers to offer a stadium seating material that meets the new ABNT regulations, including compliance with Regulation, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemical (REACH) environmental standards; and our Lexan sheet products are an ideal choice for improving energy conservation while making it possible to create large and dramatic roofing and glazing systems.” For the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, SABIC Innovative Plastics’ engineering and design team is currently working closely with the official local representatives for potential projects. Taking a Front-row Seat In addition to meeting new ABNT regulations, including UL94 V0 at 3 mm and REACH standards, Valox polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin for stadium seating provides extreme high impact strength and other high-performance properties. Unlike some materials that require the addition of masterbatches by the compounder, the SABIC Innovative Plastics resin incorporates a UV stabilizer to maintain aesthetics and clarity, flame-retardant additives and color. This integrated approach saves time and avoids logistical issues and costly secondary operations. In addition, Valox resin can further reduce costs through the use of thin-wall designs – while maintaining excellent rigidity. SABIC Innovative Plastics’ three-wall, X-structure ultra-stiff Lexan Thermoclear sheet delivers exceptional performance with the capability to withstand wind and snow loading pressures of up to 2,200 N/m2, which is equivalent to wind speeds up to 125mph (200 km/h). It also offers up to 250 times the impact resistance of glass to reduce the risk of breakage from wind, hail and other extreme weather, as well as vandalism. The multiwall configuration of the product provides excellent thermal insulation. Lexan Thermoclear sheet also contributes to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by providing natural light and its potential to be made with recycled content. Another important benefit of Lexan Thermoclear sheet is its light weight, which makes it cost-effective to transport and easier to handle and install compared to heavy glass panes. A Broad Portfolio of Sheet Solutions Another highlight from SABIC Innovative Plastics is Lexan Thermoclick sheet systems in 40 and 50 mm (1.57 and 1.97 inches) thicknesses. These products are excellent candidates for applications such as cladding and façades of stadiums. A unique, 9-wall structure with 39.4 inch-width (1000 mm), the Lexan Thermoclick PC 50 mm sheet system is not only twice the width of competitive products, but also provides a superb U-value of 0.176 Btu/h t2 Fahrenheit (1.0W/m2 K) for thermal insulation. This may lead to significant energy savings by reducing power consumption by up to 17 percent vs. traditional high-return, double-pane glass glazing. The Lexan Thermoclick 40 mm sheet system complies with CC1 (ASTM D635) and Class A (ASTM E-84) smoke and fire ratings. In addition, select monolithic grades of Lexan sheet offer anti-graffiti properties or compliance with building codes established by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO). Stadiums Around the Globe Feature Lexan Sheet SABIC Innovative Plastics’ vast portfolio of building and construction solutions has proven its value to customers in over 50 well-known stadiums worldwide. In 2010, the company won its second European Polycarbonate Sheet Extruders (EPSE) Award for the Best Project and Innovation for the new 50,000-seat Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The stadium’s transparent, curvilinear walls are constructed from Lexan monolithic sheet, which contributes elegance, high performance and environmental benefits. UV-resistant Lexan sheet was also chosen for the roofing, façades and stairway glazing of the Soccer City Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa, where the opening and closing 2010 FIFA World Cup™ matches were played.
