Innovation aimed at helping our customers to achieve their goals is the driving force behind SABIC Innovative Plastics. Today more than ever, this means focusing our expertise to help find new and more efficient solutions that advance the sustainability efforts of our customers, within our operations and society as a whole. 

As one of the world’s leading plastics manufacturers and innovators, SABIC Innovative Plastics has an active sustainability program that encompasses both operational and marketplace goals:

• First, within our own manufacturing facilities, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint, with a focus in particular on energy, greenhouse gases, water management and material effectiveness. In 2010, for example, we have 90 key projects under way at our eight largest sites that together are slated to eliminate more than 30,000 megatons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. Our manufacturing and environmental teams know that sustainability starts at home, and we are committed to substantial, continuous improvements within our operations.

• Second, as an innovator in the development of sustainable technologies, we are committed to creating and providing a steady supply of engineering thermoplastics to address our customers’ diverse environmental needs. We have continuously strengthened our portfolio to help customers across all industries lower their carbon and energy footprints, eliminate waste, and ensure strict compliance with global environmental regulations. Today, we have both a broad and deep offering for sustainable design and production. And, we have implemented a standards-based process for verifying our sustainability claims, which enables customers to use our products with confidence.

We are making these commitments because we are confident – and excited – about the unique role that engineered thermoplastics can play in reducing global carbon emissions and helping to solve other key environmental issues. For example, when used in place of incumbent technologies, our materials solutions can dramatically reduce the weight of automobiles, which conserves fuel and reduces GHGs. Our materials solutions also are being applied successfully to conserve energy in conditioned spaces in homes and office buildings. Engineered thermoplastics are highly recyclable and also can be made with post-consumer recycled materials. They are extremely adaptable to requirements for advanced flame retardance. And, we are developing more bio-based solutions every year.
